Autumn Comes Early To Waimairi School

Autumn comes early to Waimairi School
No blue skies no swimming pool.
Goldy brown leaves which feel like hard, wet plastic
Lay a blanket on the ground,
An audience for the dancing trees.
Delicate dewdrops rest on their leafy bed.
Leaves resting on a rusty picnic table, have a picnic.
The wetness of pitter patter showers
Is a snake slithering down my face.
Squelchy mud mushes like a cushion that's been squashed
Freezing puddles plop up as the kids jump on them.

Autumn comes early to Waimairi School
No blue skies no swimming pool.
But for last hope of Autumn light
Bluebirds perched on an evergreen tree take flight.
